Classroom Assignment

For my first assignment I would assign a mathematical placement test. Because I am wanting to teach high school mathematics I know that it is a necessity to have all of your students on the same page. The beginning of the assessment would include basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. Then it would progressively get harder going into fractions, then touch on factoring with algebra and trigonometry. The grades that I am looking forward to teaching are tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. After collecting and reviewing the assessment as a teacher I would find common ground within the students. After establishing the areas that need more focus and attention, I will set up assignments that will aid in the understanding and improvement of mathematical skills.

This activity is a good example of how you could measure your students’ prior math knowledge, and I believe you can add more to this with the technology aspect of your assignment (Remember, Dr. Baylen would like for you to include three forms of technology within this assignment). This about how you can use technology to “get your students on the same page.” In other words, consider how technology can assist you in reaching your objectives. Your idea is a good start (it is so hard to come up with good math activities). It is important to create an activity that will help your students in the long run and that will be meaningful to them. Try to consider more ways you could measure your students’ prior math knowledge aside from taking a test. Maybe you could hold a math chat room, where your students could discuss both their positive and negative math influences. I’m just throwing some ideas out there. Good luck!

Betty.

Good call on the placement test. We are doing the same thing at Lehigh Senior. In Language Arts and Reading, we are collecting all sorts of baseline data. This has been assiting us in being a "data-driven school." Stuff that's all the rage right now. It's a great idea to keep all of your results on spreadsheets, enter your post tests results and provide a final report to your administrators.
