More Revisions for My First Classroom Activity.

As I have tried to find ways to incorporate technology with my classroom activity I continually run into problems. Hopefully this week I can provide more clarity to my activity that is geared toward high school math students. In my previous post I stated that the placement test that I would give would be taken by the students on a PowerPoint application. A couple of weeks ago in Dr. Baylen's class he taught us how to hyperlink our PowerPoint presentations so that we as teachers can provide another option for taking a test. Most of the test I took when I was in high school were paper test. I can only remember a few that were computerized. Using the PowerPoint system would give the students a change they can enjoy. Now I will show a step by step process on how to create your very own PowerPoint presentation.
the first thing a teacher needs to obtain in order to have a successful PowerPoint test in the actual PowerPoint application. Many school computers are equipped with Microsoft office. Microsoft office is a software that contains PowerPoint. If the computers that will be utilized do not have the PowerPoint application it is easily purchased through the internet, or at your local electronic store. A manual is included with the application so downloading the application is an easy step by step process.
after the teacher establishes that he/she has access to a PowerPoint application he/she is ready to begin creating the test. First you will open a new and blank PowerPoint page. The first thing that I would do is create my test on paper and list four different answers with only one answer being the absolute correct answer. Teachers you can place as many wrong answers as you see fit. After I have established all of the questions and answers that I will use I will begin creating my PowerPoint test. The first page that you will create is a cover page. My cover page would contain the math class, date, my name, and the name of the test. After the cover page the next slide would be the first question. I would place the first question at the top of the slide and four answers along the left side underneath the question. After making the first question and set of answers, make two more slides. The first slide that I would make is a correct slide. This slide will be reached only if the student chooses the right answer. The second slide would be the incorrect slide. This slide will be accessed upon clicking on the wrong answer. Once these slides have been made you can create the second question with a list of answers. The next two slides will be the correct and incorrect slides. To speed the process I would just copy and paste the two previous correct/incorrect slides after every question. After you have made all of the slides you need it is time to hyperlink.

now to hyperlink the answers you must first highlight one answer at a time. After highlighting right click on what you have highlighted. A list of options should appear. Click on the option that says "hyperlink". Next an information box should appear and have more options to choose from. You will first click on the button that says "place in this document". Then click on the slide that the particular answer corresponds to. If it is incorrect then link it to the incorrect slide. If the answer is correct link the response to the correct slide. (for each question the answers should be linked to the correct/incorrect slides that follow that question slide.)

when you choose the link select the "ok" button. After that the answer that you have selected will be colored and underlined. Do this to the entire document for each and every answer. After every question slide has an answer that is hyperlinked to a correct/incorrect slide go back to the first correct/incorrect slides. On these slides you will add an action button. These buttons are located on the toolbar that is on the bottom of the screen. Click on "Autoshapes" and a list of options will appear with the option of action buttons. Highlight the "action buttons" option. Then you can choose either button that suggests the test taker to go forward to the next slide. After selecting one of the buttons you will place it anywhere you would like on the test by clicking your mouse in the position desired. I prefer to place my icon in the lower right corner of the slide. After choosing a spot for your icon an information box will automatically appear. Choose the option of "hyperlink to". Then click on the down arrow from the scroll menu and choose the "next slide" option. Then select "ok". Do this to every correct/incorrect slide. After you have completed all of these tasks you are ready to view your test. Press the F5 button to start your PowerPoint. You can go through the PowerPoint to make sure that everything is in the order that you want. This will also allow you to see if there are any mistakes that you need to fix.

each of my students will be taking this placement test individually in the computer lab. On my own time I will make a copy of the test on a disk and install the PowerPoint to every computer that will be utilized for the test. As stated before I will have the students engage in a blog that I will create for everyone to use. The blog will only be open and available to my students to view and comment on. I would encourage each student to discuss their thoughts and feelings of the test. Each student would have a week to post comments, thoughts, or any other kind of response that they have. I would have the students create a user name. Each student will need to post at least one type of response every week about the class. These postings will have to be made on their own time. I know that there are some students that may not have access to a computer with internet capabilities. In the case that a student cannot use internet at their home I will tell those students to go to the school library and make their comment there. These are a few revisions of my classroom activity.

I can really appreciate all of the detail you put into your activity, especially on how to obtain and set up Microsoft PowerPoint as well as how to create the hyperlinks. This is very useful for teachers who lack technological skills. You also provided a good description of how to create the PowerPoint, although for your convenience, I would like to point out that you can wait until the end of the PowerPoint to make the Correct/Incorrect slides. As you know, PowerPoint allows you to make hyperlinks that can take you to a specific slide in your PowerPoint. Just create the hyperlink to the same Correct/Incorrect page so that you won’t have to keep making a new page for these options. Also, are you planning on using the computer as your third technology component of your activity? Check with Dr. Baylen. I understand that you are using this activity to acquaint your students with math, but keep in mind that with a PowerPoint test, your students will be able to see the right and wrong answers. Perhaps you should have them also turn in a scrap sheet with their work. That way you can see if they really know how to get the answers themselves. Everything looks good. For your next post, try to outline your activity in a bulleted or numbered step-by-step list. Good luck!
